HOW DOES ONE CHOOSE A CAREER MANAGEMENT, EXERCISE OR WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM?

What do these three have in common? Each has a variety of ways the services are delivered. For example, one can either purchase exercise equipment for one’s home or join a gym. Many of us have bought expensive equipment which collects dust in the basement. Others of us are able to exercise at home as part of our daily routine with the same frequency and regularity as brushing our teeth. Others have found it better to exercise outside the home and stop at the gym on the way from work. Or better yet, sign up for a specific aerobics class held on certain dates and times. And others of us sign up to join the gym paying for a full year of service, go frequently for a month or two and then go infrequently or not at all. In the case of exercise, few of us blame the equipment or the gym for the fact that we don’t exercise more often. Hopefully, over time, we figure out which works best for us: exercising in the gym or at home. But in the case of weight-loss programs or career management services, there is a good number that find a particular program works well for them and some that find the program does not work for them. In the case of the service providers, it is much more common to blame the service provider than to examine whether the program is a good match to our needs and personality. Though the service provider can show you recommendations from many happy clients or customers, only you can know whether it will work for you. Below is a checklist to assist you in determining which type of program will work for you:

ARE YOU TRULY MOTIVATED TO CHANGE TO IMPROVE RESULTS?

No program will work if you are not truly motivated to make the necessary changes to achieve the desired results. I am not pleased to make this public but I have both purchased expensive exercise equipment that I have rarely used and I have joined gyms and rarely attended. The fact of the matter is I am not yet sufficiently motivated to make exercise a part of my daily routine even though it is essential to my health. No program will work for me until I get serious about exercise.

TRUST EXPERTS & FORMAL METHODOLOGIES/PROCESSES?

Most of our fathers were do-it-yourselfers, out of economic necessity and often having grown up in homes where working with one hands was still commonplace. And some of us resist the advice of our accountant, physician or stock broker because we believe we know better and keep changing professionals until we find the one that will tell us what we want to hear. But, most of us baby boomers are knowledge workers. We are more likely to possess college degrees and be subject matter experts for which we are well compensated. Therefore, we accept that on accountant can do a much better job preparing our tax returns than we can, and that a plumber is much more skilled to fill our leaky toilet. Therefore, if we have not made a job change in several years, or under the circumstances of this very difficult economy, we recognize that career management consultants have the expertise to assist us in accomplishing our career objectives with greater speed and efficacy than we can do on our own. And, if we are trained in the methodologies of systems development, accounting practices, or research, than we are drawn to those that can demonstrate a formal methodology to conduct an effective job search.

SOCIAL INTERACTION & SUPPORT?

The effect of signing up for an exercise class is that we’re working out in the company of others, gaining support from others, and benefiting from the coaching of the instructor. As we are social animals, most of us will benefit from and get better results by being part of a group and receiving coaching than doing it on our own.

DISCIPLINED?

Signing out for aerobics or yoga class or playing a team sport will create a discipline for us to get the exercise that we need according to a schedule rather than relying on our level of motivation to get off our butts on a daily basis.

POSSESS ‘STICK-TO-IT-NESS’? PERSISTENT? ABLE TO MAINTAIN MOMENTUM?

If we have found our attendance waning when we have signed up for a gym or class, then no program will succeed. But if we are capable of staying with it on a regular basis, or until the desired results are achieved, then we will succeed.
