WHY DIDN'T YOU HIRE ME?

Job seekers who do not get hired often wonder why and try to reach the hiring manager, human resources or recruiter for feedback. Frankly, while companies are obligated to give internal candidates developmental feedback, they are under no obligation to provide feedback to external candidates and any who have done so, have found it to be a punishing experience as they were confronted by a defensive response rather than a willingness to listen and learn. Having collected feedback as an HR executive and Recruiter from hundreds of managers over the years, below are the reasons you did not get hired; not for any one of these but because several were observed in comparison to the person that was hired. Putting aside that often the reason was another candidate had more directly relevant experience or additional credentials, for example an MBA, below are reasons that are easily within your control:

§ You changed your appointment, you were late for your appointment because you got lost or thought the appointment was at a different time or date or even though we confirmed by email.

§ Compensation – you stated your previous compensation which is above our hiring range and though you said you are “flexible”, we are not convinced you would not leave as soon as the market improved.

§ Online Assessment Form – we asked you complete a form and you submitted it incomplete though you called three times for assistance. It was clear you lack basic PC skills.

§ In the interview, you did not communicate why we should hire you. Nothing made you stand out from other candidates because you communicated your responsibilities not your accomplishments.

§ You are oblivious to your weaknesses. Where we witnessed weaknesses in your organizational ability and PC skills, you did not recognize either area as needing improvement.

§ We never heard from you after the interview so we did not think you were very interested. Other candidates sent ‘thank notes’ with specific illustrations of how they would meet the challenges of the role.

Fortunately, there are professional career management and marketing firms that can assist you in differentiating yourself, in guiding you to communicate your strengths and accomplishments and to minimize your liabilities. Most importantly, they can coach you to avoid the common pitfalls. Even the savviest executives are stymied in their search efforts because they overlook one or more of these “sand traps”. Career coaching can ensure that does not happen to you and can make a process that is longer in this economy, shortened by the absence of mistakes – mistakes you can ill afford.
