WHY DON'T RECRUITERS CALL ME?

Let’s peel back the curtain on executive recruiters:

If you’re responding to job postings placed by recruiters, you are wasting your time. Most reputable headhunters do not post jobs on Monster or CareerBuilder. They find talent through referrals or by searching on websites populated by people who are not active job seekers, particularly on LinkedIn. Recruiters who are very visible on the job boards or in the newspaper are often more interested in populating their database and then selling to companies the fact that they have the biggest database in town. If they were really looking to fill all those positions that you seem perfect for you, you would have three job offers by dinnertime tonight!

Second, recruiters are highly specialized. Even in very large firms, individual recruiters specialize in only one or two industries. If you are sending your resume to a general list of recruiters without researching that the firm or individual recruiter handles your specific industry or function you are wasting time.

Third, if a recruiter is looking to fill a requirement and you are a good match, you are the most important person in the world to them. Until then, you are totally unimportant. And even recruiters highly interested in you are presenting several qualified candidates, not just you.

So what can we take from this information? Identify recruiters who are specialists in your field and submit your resume for their database. Expect no response until the day comes that they are seeking someone of your background. Second, being highly visible with a robust profile on sites such as LinkedIn, and others that recruiters subscribe to, will mean that if a recruiter is doing a search, you will be found.

Fortunately, there are professional career management and marketing firms that can assist you in the specifics of maximizing your relationship with recruiters which is important if you are a senior executive because CEOs do not have their HR Directors post C-level jobs on the web; they are more apt to want retain a search firm for critical, strategic positions.
